Spotlight : Winter Session

We chatted with Roy Katz and Tanya Fleisher at their Five Points studio to talk sustainable materials, the city of Denver, and the inspiration behind their brand. The two started Winter Session in Chicago five years ago - what originally began as a side project grew quickly into a full-scale business, so three years later they picked up and moved back to their home state of Colorado.

With the goal to make everything as functional and unisex as possible, their products are both parts practical and timeless - making Winter Session hugely successful, not only in Denver, but world-wide. A large map hangs in their studio, pinned with all of their wholesale accounts and apron-wearers; not only is most of the U.S. covered, but Japan, England and Norway are included in the mix as well.

Winter Session also prides themselves in using the highest quality, U.S. sourced materials: their canvas comes from New Jersey, their leathers from Chicago and St. Louis. Mastering the mix of traditional craftsmanship and modern design, Winter Session has become a great addition to the mile-high city and its rising makers community.

How do you like Denver?

Denver has been awesome  -  people are super receptive, and there’s lots of community support and enthusiasm. We kind of isolated ourselves in Chicago, and we were in a neighborhood that was far from everything; in Denver everything seems closer.

What’s your inspiration?

Intuition - we draw from our collective mood.

What’s your favorite product from the lineup?

Tanya: "Definitely the Snap Wallet.”
Roy: “Probably the Day Pack, because it’s personally my favorite to carry and use everyday."

Where do you see Winter Session in a year?

Having more space (in the same neighborhood), general expansion, and being able to run more smoothly. And definitely more retail presence here in the studio.

Got any future projects we should look out for?

We’re developing a knife roll with [Denver Chef and restaurateur] Jeff Osaka later this summer, and some all-leather bags that aren’t quite ready to launch yet. We’re working on making a weekender bag as well.
